The Compulsive Lyres

Josh Buoy

Tenor – Political Science / Film ‘13

Josh is so pumped to be singing with the Lyres for his 2nd semester! Besides singing basically almost always, Josh is a representative on the Michigan Student Assembly and works at the front desk of South Quad on campus. He also loves witty TV shows — ie. How I Met Your Mother, 30 Rock, Arrested Development — watching & making movies, and Disney World. Josh’s dream job is to be a director for Pixar — the absolute greatest company to ever exist.

His favorite joke is this: Outside of a dog, a book is man’s best friend. That’s because inside of a dog, it’s too dark to read!

If you did not find that funny (which is probably the case), that’s alright — most people don’t. But if you did find that funny (which is most unlikely), Josh is going to suggest that you become friends.

To infinity and beyond!

Emily Byl

Tenalto – Public Policy ‘12

Emily is thrilled to singing in the Lyres for her 4th semester. She has an obsession with Harry Potter, and loves politics. In fact, she deferred her first semester of college to work on the Obama campaign.

Emily has arranged several Lyres hits such as “Let it Be” and the “Hip Hop Medley.” In Fall of 2010 she will take up the position of Music Director.

Ryan “R2D2″ Deleon

Bass – Economics ‘11

Ryan has been to Disney World 31 times. He likes to beat-box. Sometimes the urge to vocal-perc comes out during church and, although deemed inappropriate by his mother, it adds a nice kick to traditional hymns. He’s overly into sports – playing and watching. Lauren Rink wanted him to put in here that he is “eternally devoted” to her – he guesses that’s true. GO BLUE!

Lisa Elder

Alto – Communications ‘13

Lisa is looking forward to another great year with the Lyres. Born in Houston, Texas, she’s a Southern belle at heart, but she’s also got a city girl side from growing up in Los Angeles, California. She likes playing card games, especially Egyptian Ratscrew and Mao, hanging out with her Alpha Delta Pi Sorority sisters, coin collecting, talking in accents, hiking, horse back riding, laughing, reading, watching classic Disney movies, and, of course, singing!

After suiciding the Compulsive Lyres during A Capella Rush in Fall 2009, she has enjoyed two semesters of personal growth as a singer and team-member as well as developing friendships with her fellow Lyres. As Social Chair, she will be arranging fun inter- and intra-a capella group activities. So if you’d like the chance to meet our group outside of performances, shoot her an e-mail!

Meredith Finch

Soprano – Music/Film ‘13

Meredith is super excited to start her second year with the Compulsive Lyres! She is not-so-originally from Knoxville, TN, but it’s the most recent (and coolest) place she has lived, so that’s what she calls her hometown. In addition to singing, she loves playing the piano, watching movies, reading, looking up cute pictures of animals, Facebook stalking, and making up catch phrases. And of course, she loves spending time with her awesome friends in Lyres!

This past year, Meredith had an amazing time making strong friendships and improvements as a singer and group member. She also adds an extra dose of awkwardness to the group, so that’s cool…yeah. She is looking forward to a fantastic year singing with some of her best friends, aka the coolest a cappella singers on campus!

Lee Gunderson

Bass – Engineering ‘12

Lee enjoys flyering and having a fanclub.

Christian Keil

Tenor – Economics / Psychology ‘13

Christian is so excited to start his second year with the Lyres! Outside of singing, Christian likes to rock climb, be way too competitive in games that don’t merit such behavior (ex: Monopoly), hang out with his friends in Sigma Chi (his fraternity), cry because there will never be another episode of LOST, and more than anything, Christian likes dramatically looking away from the camera when being photographed.

Although it is only his second semester in the Lyres, he is trying to help out in any way that he can. He currently holds the position of Publicity Manager, and is the first Lyre to hold the new position of Webmaster… basically, he’s trying to find a way to work into his bio that he built the website. So yeah.

Alexa Lord

Alto – Psychology / Political Science ‘12

Alexa is a summer camp counselor at Camp Henry, and is in the sorority Alpha Delta Pi. She loves comedy, impersonations, and improvisation. She also enjoys playing catch, doing roadrally’s and throwing butter with friends, bonfires and good stories, polish food, backscratches, sitting in a booth by a window, the way men look in suits, thunderstorms, and laughing.

Emily Lyon

Alto – Undecided ‘13

Emily feels like she’s always been destined to be a Lyre. Not only has she practiced her puns for years, she already has two “Ly”s in her name. Clearly, by alliteration, the match was fate. Also amazingly coincidental, Emily is one of two blond altos named Emily who can sing ridiculously low, and have been the Lyres’ Business Manager! Trippy.

Other than analyzing the fates, Emily likes Shakespeare, bad jokes, being generally adventurous, and using proper grammar. This year is her first as the reigning Business Manager, so she plans to keep organized and is more than happy to help with any questions – even those entirely unrelated to the Lyres happenings. Lastly, she’d like to apologize about these awkward paragraphs – You Know I’m No Good at bios.

Melissa Nestor

Soprano – Elementary Education ‘11

Melissa is super excited to be in her senior year with the Lyres, but is also sad it’s her last. Melissa will be student teaching kindergarten this year and couldn’t be more excited. Along the same lines, she is also obsessed with stars, sparkles, bright colors, puppies, and other generally happy things.

This is Melissa’s 7th semester in Lyres, and her favorite role was being music director last year. She has also been the publicity manager and business manager in past years. This year, she is going to enjoy Lyres without any responsibility and just sing with her favorite people! :)

Lauren Rink

Soprano – Communications / Women’s Studies ‘12

Lauren likes coffee. She also used to be an ice skating teacher, which is cool, because her last name is Rink!

Kat Weber

Alto – Epidemiology ‘09

Kat is thrilled for the opportunity to continue singing with the Lyres as a graduate student! In addition to making beautiful music with 12 of her best friends, Kat enjoys climbing random buildings, dominating at scrabble, sipping caramel macchiatos, playing the piano, eating crushed ice, and being awkward.
